## Narrative
Dawid (David) Barbanel entered the world at four o'clock in the morning on 1/13 April 1879, in the village of Mętów, and was carried into the record a week later. On 8/20 April, at ten in the morning, his father [[Chaim Barbanel (b.1840)]] — then forty-four, born and living in Mętów, and earning his bread as the tenant of a mill — came before the civil registrar at Posad Głusk, near Lublin, to declare the birth. Two men stood as witnesses: Yudka Goldstein, a synagogue functionary of fifty-four, and Szlema-Meer Pizem, a thirty-year-old teacher. The father presented the boy, born of his lawful wife Chasia née Goldberg, aged forty-two, and stated that at his circumcision the child had been named David. The act, read aloud, was signed.[^birth] From this single document descend the two facts that anchor Dawid's place in the tree: his father Chaim, and his mother — the [[Chysza Ajdla Goldberg (b.1844)]] whom the Głusk clerk set down more plainly as "Chasia née Goldberg."
In 1905, as a young man of twenty-six, Dawid married at Głusk. His bride was Genendel — "Ginda" in the household books — of the Szpic (Spitz) family, and their union was entered in the Głusk marriage register for that year.[^marriage] The marriage carried Dawid into a second lineage: through Ginda he became son-in-law to Berko Szpic and Frajda née Friedman, the couple whose names the later residents' register would preserve as the parents of his wife.[^residents]
It is the Ostrów Lubelski Book of Residents (*Księga ludności stałej*) that draws the family together on a single page. There, as household no. 281, the Barbanels are enrolled as one unit. Dawid heads the entry, his parentage spelled out in the register's own hand as "Chaim Dawid i Gisia z d. Goldberg" — the same father and mother of the birth act, the mother's given name here rendered "Gisia." He is set down as married, of the Jewish townsman (*mieszczanin*) estate, and supported by trade: his means of living is given as *torgowiec*, a merchant. His prior residence is noted as Posad Ostrów, with a cross-reference back to an earlier residents' book — "vol. VII, no. 121" — so that the register itself points to a still older record of the family in the town. Below the main entry, in a later hand of the interwar Second Republic, a Polish annotation records that Dawid held a national identity card (*dowód osobisty*), no. 841117, issued by the district office at Lublin (*Starostwo w Lublinie*) — a bureaucratic trace binding the family to the Lublin district well into the 1920s or 1930s.[^residents] The second row of the same household is his wife: Ginda Barbanel née Szpic, born 1888, her parents given as Berko and Frajda née Friedman.[^residents] The third row is their eldest son, Azriel-Josek (Azriel Yosef) Barbanel, born 12/25 January 1907 at Posad Głusk, entered as single and of the townsman estate — the register thus fixing both his birth date and his birthplace.[^residents] Dawid and Genendel's later children — [[Nusyn Barbanel (b.1911)]], [[Herszek Barbanel (b.1913)]] and [[Helen Barbanel (b.1919)]] — fall outside this particular page.
Dawid's name surfaces once more, in a very different kind of source. He is listed among the *prenumeranten* — the advance subscribers whose names were printed at the back of the book — of *Alei Ayin*, a rabbinic work by R. Josef Kartofel, in the roster gathered from Głusk.[^subscribers] Subscription lists of this sort are a quiet index of a man's standing: to be named among them marks Dawid as a settled householder of some means, willing and able to underwrite a Torah scholar's publication, and rooted enough in the Głusk community to be canvassed for it.
Dawid Barbanel did not die in his bed. He was murdered in the Holocaust, his death recorded as 16 December 1942 at the Majdanek concentration camp on the edge of Lublin — the same Lublin district whose starostwo had once issued his identity card. The fact is preserved in an International Tracing Service death file.[^its]

## Research
*(your reasoning — preserved across every rebuild)*
- **Ostrów Lubelski Book of Residents, household no. 281, p. 286** (Akta miasta Ostrowa Lubelskiego, APLublin 35/581) — Russian-language residents' register listing the Barbanel family as one household: (1) **Dawid Barbanel** — parents given as "Chaim Dawid i Gisia z d. Goldberg," born 1 April 1879 (birthplace column reads Posad Ostrów — see Open questions), married, Jewish townsman, occupation *torgowiec* (merchant); prior residence Posad Ostrów, ref. to earlier book vol. VII no. 121; later Polish note: dowód osobisty no. 841117 issued by Starostwo w Lublinie. (2) **Ginda Barbanel née Szpic** — parents Berko and Frajda née Friedman, born 1888; married. (3) **Azriel-Josek Barbanel** (son) — parents Dawid and Ginda, born 12/25 January 1907 in Posad Głusk, single. Confirms Dawid's parentage (Chaim + Chysza/Chasia Goldberg), his marriage to Genendel Szpic, her parents (Berko Szpic + Frajda Friedman), and son Azriel Josef's 1907 birth. ## Open questions
- **Birthplace discrepancy — Ostrów vs. Mętów/Głusk.** The 1879 birth act records Dawid as born in **Mętów** (registered at Głusk); the Ostrów Lubelski Book of Residents instead enters his birthplace as **Posad Ostrów**. The residents' register birthplace column often records the family's place of legal domicile rather than the actual place of birth, so this is likely a domicile entry, not a contradiction of the birth record. Not resolved on the page itself.
- **Mother's name form.** The birth act and existing profile give the mother as **Chysza/Chasia Ajdla Goldberg**; the residents' register renders her as **"Gisia z d. Goldberg."** Same person (née Goldberg), spelling variant of the given name — added here for the record; treat "Gisia" as a recorded variant of Chysza/Chasia.
- **Ginda's birthplace** in the residents' register (row 2, born 1888) is written as a place name I could not confidently read (possibly "Świnc…"/"Święc…"). Left unresolved; the scan link above is the exact page for anyone re-reading it.
