## Narrative
Jozsef ("Yosef") Beuernfreund was born 16 July 1903 in [[Zborov]], in the Šariš region of what is today northeastern Slovakia — a district his family regarded as culturally close to Poland ("the people came from an area that's very Polish").[^auto] Family recollection describes him as the youngest of a large sibling group; the account gives his siblings variously as twelve or "one of 13," of whom only five were said to remain by later reckoning.[^auto] He was orphaned young — his father died of a heart attack when Yosef was about nine, by which point his older siblings had already married — and his widowed mother ran a small grocery store, which the boy helped by carrying stock to the shop.[^auto]
He was born under the surname Getzler, his father's name. According to the family account he later adopted Bornfreund, his mother's maiden name, in the belief that changing his name might let him evade conscription for the First World War; he was said to be already married with a child at the time. The change did not achieve its aim, and the account holds that his wartime service consisted of grooming horses and shining a captain's shoes.[^auto] (These are family-tradition details; the surname change from Getzler to Bornfreund is also reflected in the linked Geni profile title.[^geni])
Yosef married [[Jente Yolanda Neuman (b.1902)]], who came from Hukliva; the couple settled in Pressburg (Bratislava). There, before the Second World War, he kept an "appetizing" store — a delicatessen selling lox, herring and similar goods — in Pressburg, then in Czechoslovakia.[^auto] The couple had at least two recorded children, [[Diana Beuernfreund (Bornfreund) (b.1937)]] and [[Alan Coral]].[^auto] A family anecdote recalls an early-childhood bout of illness during a diphtheria outbreak in which a daughter ("bubbie") was given an injection whose nature the mother did not fully understand — a thread the account follows through a later, near-fatal illness after the family had reached Colombia, where a doctor again diagnosed diphtheria.[^auto] The references to Colombia and later to the United States indicate the family emigrated from Europe, though the sources at hand do not date or detail that migration.[^auto]
The family account also preserves how a branch of relatives was rediscovered: Yosef learned of cousins on his mother's side (given as Yaakov and Meir) through his wife's cousin Ida, who worked in the necktie trade and recognized that a "Meir Bauerfreund" in the same trade must be kin.[^auto] One relative, "Yaakov," is described as a sculptor who lived in England — very likely the painter Jakub Bauernfreund (born Zborov, 1904), whose connection the family drew from a museum reference to his work; the specific museum page cited in the profile no longer resolves and this identification should be treated as a probable, not confirmed, link.[?][^museum]
Jozsef Beuernfreund died 2 June 1985.[^auto]

## Open questions
- **Needs browser pass** — Geni profile [Yosef (Joseph) Bornfreund (Getzler)](https://www.geni.com/people/Yosef-Joseph-Bornfreund-Getzler/4545704640870022545) returned empty via WebFetch (auth/JS-gated). Read in a browser to confirm parents, siblings, dates, and the Colombia→USA migration; the title corroborates the Getzler→Bornfreund surname change only.
- **Dead link** — the cited Jewish Museum in Prague page for Jakub Bauernfreund ("Still Life with Fruit and Torso," jewishmuseum.cz object 268) now returns HTTP 404. Find the current museum URL to confirm the sculptor/painter "Yaakov" = Jakub Bauernfreund (b. Zborov, 1904) family link.
- Migration timeline unresolved: family account references both Colombia and the United States, but no dates or ports of the Europe → Colombia → USA moves are recorded.
