## Narrative
Menachem Mendel Bernstein — "Mendel" in his records — was a village shopkeeper of **[[Verkhnya Hrabivnytsya|Vyšnà Hrabovnice]]** (Hrabovnice), the Subcarpathian village that was home to four generations of this Bernstein line. He was born there on **16 April 1868**, the son of **Jankel Bernstein**, himself a *kramár* (grocer/shopkeeper), and **Chána Neumann** — [[Yaakov Yehudah Leib Bernstein (b.1830)]] and [[Chaya Neumann (b.1831)]].[^birth] His birth went onto the civil register only in 1927, entered late by order of the provincial authority — a common step for Subcarpathians needing papers under the Czechoslovak state.[^birth]
He followed his father into trade. In the village he kept a shop, selling the everyday staples of a Carpathian community — rice, kerosene (*naft*), salt and basic groceries.[^trade] The **1921 Czechoslovak census** finds him settled and secure: **owner of house No. 59** in Hrabovnice and its head, an *obchodnÃk* (merchant), living there with his wife **Berta** — [[Brane Friedman (b.1864)]] — and a full household of children and grandchildren.[^census] He and Brane had eight children, among them [[Moshe Bernstein (b.1887)]], **[[Tzvi Hershel Bernstein (b.1889)]]** (recorded in the census as "Herman"), [[Ignác Bernstein (b.1895)]], [[Salamún Bernstein (b.1903)]] and [[Tova Bernstein (b.1907)]]. The same census sheet catches three generations under one roof: Mendel, his married son Herman, and Herman's infant son "Erno" — the child who would grow up to be [[Aron Bernstein (b.1919)]].[^census]
Mendel lived his whole life in Hrabovnice, and it was from that world that the Holocaust took him. In the spring of 1944 the Jews of Subcarpathia were ghettoised and deported; Menachem Mendel was murdered at **Auschwitz**, his death recorded as **24 May 1944**, in his seventy-sixth year.[^death]
[^birth]: Birth register of **Vyšnà Hrabovnice** (Subcarpathian Rus', Czechoslovakia), entry **no. 132**, a **late registration made in 1927** of an 1868 birth (by decision of the provincial office, ref. I-5302/27, dated 5 August 1927), read directly from the scan. "**Mendel**," boy, Jewish (*izr.*), born **16 April 1868**, Vyšnà Hrabovnice; father **Bernstein Jankel**, *kramár* (grocer), aged 38 (→ b. ~1830); mother **Neumann Chána**, aged 37 (→ b. ~1831). Confirms parents [[Yaakov Yehudah Leib Bernstein (b.1830)]] and [[Chaya Neumann (b.1831)]]. (Record image on this profile.)
[^census]: **Czechoslovak population census, 17 February 1921** (*Popisný hárok / ÖsszeÃrási Ãv*), household at **Hrabovnice house No. 59**, read directly from the scan (vault document I500214_doc0.pdf). Head: **Bernstein Mendel**, house-owner (*majitel domu*) and merchant, born 1867/68, of Hrabovnice; wife **Berta** (b. 8 April 1864); unmarried children Ignác (1895), "Mari" (1899), Salamon (1903), "Tuzi"/Tova (1907); married son **Herman** (b. 1889 = [[Tzvi Hershel Bernstein (b.1889)]]) with his wife and their infant son **"Erno"** (b. 1919 = [[Aron Bernstein (b.1919)]]); plus a Rothfeld relative born in Poland. All recorded as of Jewish nationality and religion.
[^trade]: Family recollection (recorded on the MyHeritage profile): "Sold items such as rice, naft [kerosene], salt and basic groceries."
[^death]: Death recorded as **24 May 1944, Auschwitz** (per the family tree / memorial record). Historically consistent with the deportation of the Jews of Munkács and Subcarpathia to Auschwitz-Birkenau in May 1944. No primary deportation/death document has been read here (see Open questions).
## Research
- **Birth, 1868 (registered 1927), Vyšnà Hrabovnice (register no. 132).** Read directly. **Mendel Bernstein**, b. **16 April 1868**; father **Bernstein Jankel**, *kramár* (grocer), 38 (→ b. ~1830) = [[Yaakov Yehudah Leib Bernstein (b.1830)]]; mother **Neumann Chána**, 37 (→ b. ~1831) = [[Chaya Neumann (b.1831)]]. Late registration by provincial-office decision, Aug 1927. (Image I500214_2.)
- **1921 Czechoslovak census, Hrabovnice house #59.** Read directly (I500214_doc0.pdf). Mendel = house-owner & merchant; wife Berta (b.1864 = [[Brane Friedman (b.1864)]]); children incl. **Herman** (b.1889 = [[Tzvi Hershel Bernstein (b.1889)]]) and grandson **Erno** (b.1919 = [[Aron Bernstein (b.1919)]]) — three generations in one household.
- **Occupation:** village shopkeeper (rice, kerosene, salt, groceries); house-owner. Continued his father Jankel's *kramár* trade.
- **Fate:** murdered at Auschwitz, recorded 24 May 1944 (Subcarpathian deportations). Wife [[Brane Friedman (b.1864)]].
## Evidence
- **1868/1927 birth register (Vyšnà Hrabovnice, no. 132)** — Mendel Bernstein, b. 16 April 1868; father Bernstein Jankel (grocer), mother Neumann Chána. His own birth record (late-registered); fixes his birth date and parents.

*Birth register of Vyšnà Hrabovnice, entry no. 132 — the 1927 late registration of Mendel Bernstein's birth on 16 April 1868, son of Bernstein Jankel (kramár/grocer) and Neumann Chána.*
- **1921 Czechoslovak census (Hrabovnice house #59)** — the Bernstein household: Mendel (house-owner/merchant), wife Berta, their children, married son Herman and grandson Erno (Aron). Documents his standing, trade, home, and family. Vault document: [[I500214_doc0.pdf|1921 census sheet]].
## Open questions
- **Death record.** His death at Auschwitz (24 May 1944) rests on the family tree; a deportation list (Munkács ghetto, May 1944), a Yad Vashem Page of Testimony, or a post-war declaration-of-death record would document it directly.
- **Wife's fate.** Whether [[Brane Friedman (b.1864)]] was deported and murdered with him is not established here.
- **Birth year (1867 vs 1868).** The 1921 census implies ~1867; the birth register gives 16 April 1868 (preferred).
