## Narrative
Michel Barbanel is not a documented man so much as a name recovered from a suffix. No surviving record names him in his own right; he is known only as the father whose given name is embedded in his sons' patronymics. Before the Jewish families of [[Ostrów Lubelski]] took fixed surnames, a man was identified by his father's name, and in the Ostrów tax and fiscal rolls of the late 1810s two brothers appear side by side under exactly that older style: "**Josef Michlowicz**" and "**Moszko Michlowicz**" — Josef and Moszko, sons of Michel.[^list1819] Josef is [[Josef Barbanel (b.1773)]], the direct ancestor; Moszko is very probably [[Moszek Barbanel]], the man whose descendants (through [[Majer Barbanel (b.1793)]]) form a parallel Ostrów Barbanel branch. Their shared patronymic points back to one father, and "Michel/Michał" is the name it preserves.[^list1819]
The name was fixed onto that patronymic base within a narrow window. In the Ostrów contribution list of February 1819 Josef is still "Josef Michlowicz," but in the town's billeting assessment a year or two later his son [[Nusyn Barbanel (b.1798)]] already stands at the head of the house-owners as "Nusyn Barbanel."[^list1819][^surname] The 1821 Congress-Poland surname decree falls squarely in that gap, so the family adopted "Barbanel" about 1819–1821 — and Michel, dead or elderly by then, never bore it. That the recurring name "Moszek" reappears across several later Barbanel branches leaves a genuine alternative open — that the family patriarch was a Moszek rather than a Michel — but on the evidence read so far the patronymic "Michlowicz" borne by both brothers is the plainest witness, and it names Michel.[^surname]
[^list1819]: Ostrów Jewish contribution/tax list, 8 February 1819 (AGAD, "Miasto Ostrów w departamencie siedleckim, vol. I," jednostka 17743028, scan cur=39) — read directly from the full-resolution scan. Among twelve Jewish householders: No. 2 "Moszko Michlowicz" and No. 7 "Josef Michlowicz" — the two sons of Michel, still under pre-surname patronymics. The same "Josef Michlowicz" appears elsewhere in the book (per the family's MyHeritage biography, at Nos. 8, 12 and 34), and "Moszko Michlowicz" recurs. [^surname]: Surname-adoption window: father still "Josef Michlowicz" in the Feb. 1819 contribution list ([scan](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/17743028?p_p_id=Jednostka&_Jednostka_delta=1&_Jednostka_cur=39)); son [[Nusyn Barbanel (b.1798)]] already surnamed "Barbanel" and heading the house-owners in the town's early-1820s billeting assessment (jednostka 17743030, cur=101, read directly — [scan](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/17743030?p_p_id=Jednostka&_Jednostka_delta=1&_Jednostka_cur=101)). The 1821 surname decree falls in this gap. The recurrence of the name "Moszek" across later Barbanel branches keeps alive an alternative that the patriarch was a Moszek; see [[Barbanel — Josef's Father]] for the graded hypotheses.
## Research
*(your reasoning — preserved across every rebuild)*
- **"Michel" rests on the patronymic, not on any record naming him.** The direct evidence is the 1819 Ostrów contribution list (read directly), in which Josef and Moszko both appear as "**Michlowicz**" — sons of Michel. See [[Barbanel — Josef's Father]] for the full hypothesis table (Michel ~45% / Moszek ~35% / two-generation Michel←Moszek).
- **Surname adoption dated to ~1819–1821** by bracketing: "Josef Michlowicz" (1819) → "Nusyn Barbanel" (early-1820s billeting). Read directly on both scans.
- This profile is the placeholder for [[Josef Barbanel (b.1773)]]'s father; the same 1819 list is the key document for the [[Barbanel — Josef's Father]] brick wall.
## Evidence
- **1819 Ostrów contribution list — "Josef Michlowicz" (No. 7) and "Moszko Michlowicz" (No. 2).** The two sons of Michel under their pre-surname patronymics, in the same Ostrów tax roll. ## Open questions
- **No record yet names Michel directly.** Best routes: (1) the 1821 surname-declaration books (Lublin/Siedlce State Archive), which usually name the declarant's father; (2) Jewish marriage acts of Josef's or Moszko's children, which name father + grandfather. See [[Barbanel — Josef's Father]] next-steps.
- **Michel vs. Moszek.** The two-Michlowicz-brothers reading supports Michel; the recurrence of "Moszek" in descendant naming keeps the Moszek hypothesis alive. Unresolved — do not collapse the placeholder to a documented identity.
