Through the 1850s he was the man who held [[Łęczna]]'s **brickworks concession** — the lease of the town cash-office's income from making and firing brick, roof-tile and lime on the municipal commons.[^liq] The concession came to him at the end of a stubborn little auction. In 1852 the town put up the *cegielnia* (brickworks) income for 1852–54 — a lease that in earlier years had been worth 50 silver roubles a year — but the bidding **failed three times over**; then Chaim Wajnberg offered a mere 20 roubles, and the provincial government ordered a fourth auction to force the figure up. At that fourth sitting **Lejbuś Edelsztejn carried it, for 26 roubles 66 kopecks** — still well below the old rate.[^r1852] He kept the concession as it was re-let year by year.
