## Narrative
**Pejsach Edelsztajn** — before the surname, **Peysach Rubinowicz** ("Peysach son of Rubin") — was the eldest son of the substantial [[Łęczna]] burgher [[Rubin Edelsztajn (b.1744)]] and [[Ita (b.1741)]], born in the town about 1764 and dead there in 1831. Like his father he traded in the Łęczna market: the town books show him holding a **market-stall (*kramnica* / *klitka*) among the stalls in the middle of the Rynek**, in the north row — his stall named, in a 1796 deed, as the boundary on one side of the stall that the merchant **Chaim Leybowicz Bergierman** and his wife Matla gave to their son Elo Jankiel (Peysach's stall on the one side, Gierszon Herszowicz's on the other).[^p1796] He married [[Chana (b.1771)]] and raised a large family in Łęczna; he died there on **2 November 1831**, about sixty-seven.
[^p1796]: Łęczna notarial register, act No. 138, registered 22 May 1805 (underlying deed 16 Marcheszwan / Oct 1796) — a donation by Chaim Leybowicz Bergierman & wife Matla Janelowna to their son [[Elo Jankiel Bergierman (b.1771)]] of a Rynek market-stall, *"sytuowaną między Kramnicą **Peysacha Rubinowicza** z jedney strony i Gierszona Herszowicza Kramnicą z drugiey."* APL 35/44/0/1/35, jedn. 1753841, sc.[126](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/1753841?p_p_id=Jednostka&_Jednostka_delta=1&_Jednostka_cur=126); read from the scan 2026-07-06.
## Research
*(your reasoning — preserved across every rebuild)*
**1796 — Rynek market-stall holder ("Peysach Rubinowicz").** In act 138 of the 1805–06 Łęczna notarial register (APL 35/44/0/1/35, jedn. 1753841, sc.[126](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/1753841?p_p_id=Jednostka&_Jednostka_delta=1&_Jednostka_cur=126)) his stall (*kramnica*) in the middle-Rynek north row is named as the boundary of the stall Chaim Leybowicz Bergierman donated to his son [[Elo Jankiel Bergierman (b.1771)]] (1796 deed, registered 1805). Identity: **Peysach Rubinowicz = Peysach son of Rubin = this man** (Rubin Edelsztajn's eldest son). Deep-read from the scan 2026-07-06. *(His father Rubin held the town's slaughterhouse/jatki concession; Pejsach's own Rynek stall fits the family's market trade.)*
**Death record (Łęczna, akta 78) — d. 2 Nov 1831, aged 67 (→ b.~1764).** The death act gives his **mother's name as "Tyla,"** not Ita — a discrepancy against the frontmatter mother [[Ita (b.1741)]] (see Open questions). The age (67) fixes his ~1764 birth. [scan](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/9d71618364cf2f2df30c3cb1222916ed74a572b31ffd0cea63d0745c211058ea) (not yet read directly).

*1796/1805 — act 138: the Rynek market-stall Chaim Leybowicz Bergierman donates to his son Elo Jankiel is described as lying **"między Kramnicą Peysacha Rubinowicza"** (between the stall of Peysach Rubinowicz = Pejsach Edelsztajn) and Gierszon Herszowicz's. ## Open questions
- **Mother — Ita or Tyla?** His 1831 death record (akta 78) names his mother "**Tyla**," but the frontmatter/tree has [[Ita (b.1741)]] (Rubin Edelsztajn's wife). Reconcile — a mis-record, a second wife of Rubin, or a variant? Read the death scan directly.
