## Narrative
Srul Abram Friedman was born in the *posad* of **[[Głusk]]**, near Lublin, in the small hours of **23 March 1881** (11 March by the old calendar) — the **elder of twins**.[^birth] His father, [[Szajma Hersz Friedman (b.1859)]], was a young merchant of Głusk, only twenty-one; his mother was [[Ita Ryfka Stajnzalc (b.1857)]], recorded at the birth as Ryfka Ita née Sztajnzalc, aged twenty-two.[^birth] The infant was named **Srul-Abram** at his *brit*, before two synagogue functionaries — the *shammes* Judka Goldsztajn and the sexton Szlema Majer Pizem.[^birth]
He married **[[Tauba Winer (b.1877)]]**, and the couple had five children in Głusk: [[Sylka Gitla Friedman (b.1900)]], [[Shamai Friedman (b.1902)]], [[Manas Friedman (b.1903)]], [[Chaja Friedman (b.1905)]] and [[Baila Yachet Yocheved Friedman (b.1908)]] — the last of whom would survive the Holocaust and reach the Bronx.
His own life was short. On **19 September 1914** — just weeks into the First World War — Srul Abram died at six in the morning in Głusk, aged only **thirty-three**.[^death] The death act, brought the next day by two Głusk merchants, names him "son of Szajma Hersz and Ryfka née Sztajnzalc" and records that he was a **permanent resident of the gmina of Kurów**, though he lived and died in Głusk.[^death] His death left Tauba a widow with five children, the youngest — Baila — barely six years old, on the eve of a world war.
[^birth]: Birth act no. 11, civil register of the *posad* of **Głusk**, dated 18/30 March 1881, read directly from the scan. Father **Szajma Hersz Friedman**, merchant (*torgowiec*) of Głusk, aged 21, presented a male child, **the elder of twins**, born in Głusk on **11/23 March 1881 at 3 a.m.** of his lawful wife **Ryfka Ita née Sztajnzalc**, aged 22; named **Srul-Abram** at circumcision. Witnesses: Judka Goldsztajn, *shammes*, 55, and Szlema Majer Pizem, synagogue sexton, 32; the father signed, the witnesses declared illiterate. Registrar W. Fronk. (His twin was [[Sura Gitla Friedman (b.1881)]].)
[^death]: Death act no. 10, civil register of **Głusk**, dated 7/20 September 1914, read directly from the scan. Declarants **Lejzor Lajtel** (49) and **Raskel Lejzman** (56), merchants of Głusk, declared that the day before — **6/19 September 1914 at 6 a.m.** — died in Głusk **Srul-Abram Friedman**, aged **33**, a permanent resident of the *posad* and gmina of **Kurów**, "son of **Szajma Hersz and Ryfka née Sztajnzalc**, spouses Friedman." One witness signed, the other declared illiterate. (Confirms parents; the vault's death date "20 Sept 1914" is the registration date — death was 19 Sept.)

## Open questions
- **Death date (19 vs 20 September 1914).** The death act registers the death as the day before the 7/20 September registration — i.e. **19 September 1914**; the vault's "09/20/1914" is the registration date.
- **Kurów residency.** He was a permanent resident (*przypisany*) of gmina Kurów while living in Głusk — the family's connection to Kurów (and whether earlier Friedman records are filed there) is worth pursuing.
- **Cause of early death (age 33)** is not given in the act.
