## Narrative
Chaim Grynblat was a **villager** — a permanent resident of **[[Rozkopaczew]]**, one of the settlements of the Łęczna Jewish district — born about 1812, the son of [[Lejbus Grynblat (b.1780)]] and [[Pesia (b.1780)]].[^death] He married [[Chwula Tuchsznajder (b.1818)]], and their children included [[Syma Fajga Grynblat (b.1826)]], [[Abram Lejbus Grynblat (b.1835)]], [[Moszek Hersz Grynblat (b.1839)]] and Serka. Two of those children carry the direct line down twice over: through Syma (who married the Łęczna shoemaker [[Dawid Frenk (b.1821)]]) and separately through Moszek Hersz — so Chaim stands in Ozzy's tree along two paths at once.
His death record catches him at the very end, and in a telling domestic circumstance. On **13 November 1877** — 1 November by the old calendar — the sixty-five-year-old Chaim died not at home in Rozkopaczew but in the town of [[Łęczna]], where he was **staying with his son-in-law, Dawid Frenk** (*при своемъ зятѣ Давидѣ Френкѣ проживающій*).[^death] That single phrase does double duty: it shows an ageing village Jew spending his last days in town under his daughter and son-in-law's roof, and it confirms in Chaim's own record that Dawid Frenk had married his daughter Syma.[^sonlaw] He left his **widow, Chula**.[^death]
The death was registered the next morning, 14 November, at eight o'clock, before the mayor of Łęczna, by two townsmen who both declared they were unlettered: Boruch Lejb Bal[t]man, a householder of about sixty, and Hercyk, the *szkolnik* (synagogue sexton) of twenty-seven.[^death] His recorded age of sixty-five places his birth about 1812.
[^death]: Death act no. 32, Łęczna civil register, dated 2/14 November 1877, read directly from the scan. Declarants **Boruch Lejb Bal[t]man**, householder (*домовладѣлецъ*), ~60, and **Hercyk [—]**, *szkolnik* (synagogue sexton), 27, both of Łęczna and both illiterate, declared that on **1/13 November 1877** died in Łęczna the Jew **Chaim Grynblat**, aged **65**, "son of the late **Lejbuś and Pesia**," a permanent resident of the village of **Rozkopaczew** in the Łęczna Jewish district, at the time **temporarily residing in Łęczna with his son-in-law Dawid Frenk** (*при своемъ зятѣ Давидѣ Френкѣ*), leaving a widowed wife, **Chula**. Registered before the mayor of Łęczna. Age 65 → birth c. 1812. Scan: [Akta 32](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/5ee0499aabdf2047d7304e2b14e23fe3359c6024d4bce6c1d54a210770c84bbd). [^sonlaw]: [[Dawid Frenk (b.1821)]], the Łęczna shoemaker, married Chaim's daughter [[Syma Fajga Grynblat (b.1826)]]; their daughter [[Bajla Frenk (b.1857)]] is the direct ancestor. Chaim's 1877 death act naming Dawid Frenk as his *son-in-law* (*зять*) independently confirms this marriage.
## Research
- **Death, 1877, Łęczna (death act no. 32).** Read directly. **Chaim Grynblat**, aged **65**, died **1/13 November 1877** in Łęczna; "son of the late **Lejbuś and Pesia**"; a permanent resident of the village of **Rozkopaczew** (Łęczna Jewish district), temporarily staying in Łęczna **with his son-in-law Dawid Frenk**; left widow **Chula** (Chwula). Declarants Boruch Lejb Bal[t]man (householder, ~60) & Hercyk, *szkolnik* (27), both illiterate; registered before the mayor of Łęczna. Age 65 → b. c. 1812. Source: [Akta 32](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/5ee0499aabdf2047d7304e2b14e23fe3359c6024d4bce6c1d54a210770c84bbd).
- **Parentage** confirmed by the death act: son of **Lejbuś** ([[Lejbus Grynblat (b.1780)]]) and **Pesia** ([[Pesia (b.1780)]]).
- **Son-in-law Dawid Frenk** named in the death act — confirms [[Dawid Frenk (b.1821)]] × [[Syma Fajga Grynblat (b.1826)]] marriage and that Chaim was Syma's father.
- **Cross-check on Syma's birth year.** Chaim (b. ~1812) cannot be father of a child born 1826 (he would be ~14). This supports the reading of the 1857 birth act of [[Bajla Frenk (b.1857)]], where the mother "Syma" is aged 21 (→ b. ~1836) — i.e. [[Syma Fajga Grynblat (b.1826)]]'s birth year is probably closer to ~1836. Flagged on Bajla's and (to check) Syma's profiles.
## Evidence
- **1877 death act (Łęczna, no. 32)** — Chaim Grynblat, aged 65, of Rozkopaczew, died in Łęczna at his son-in-law Dawid Frenk's; son of Lejbuś and Pesia; widow Chula. His own death record; fixes his death, approximate birth year, parents, home village, and the Frenk marriage tie.

*Death act no. 32, Łęczna civil register, 1877 — death of Chaim Grynblat, aged 65, of Rozkopaczew, "residing in Łęczna with his son-in-law Dawid Frenk," son of the late Lejbuś and Pesia, leaving widow Chula ([szukajwarchiwach scan](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/5ee0499aabdf2047d7304e2b14e23fe3359c6024d4bce6c1d54a210770c84bbd)).*
## Open questions
- **Birth record.** No birth/marriage record for Chaim yet found; a Rozkopaczew/Łęczna-district birth (~1812) would confirm his parents [[Lejbus Grynblat (b.1780)]] & [[Pesia (b.1780)]] beyond the death-act statement.
- **Syma's birth year.** The death act (Dawid Frenk = son-in-law) plus Chaim's own age make [[Syma Fajga Grynblat (b.1826)]]'s "1826" birth year doubtful; ~1836 fits better (see Bajla Frenk's 1857 birth act). Worth revisiting Syma's own records.
- **"PLACEHOLDER Mortka Grynblat"** child is unresolved — needs a source tying him to Chaim and Chwula.
