She grew up in an innkeeper's household: her father kept a *szynk* in Bychawa, and when her marriage came to be arranged he was set down as a *szynkarz* (tavern-keeper) of about forty-four.[^banns] In the records of her youth she carries no fixed surname, as was still normal for Jewish townspeople before the surname-adoption of the 1820s; she is simply **Dwora Abusiówna** — "Abuś's daughter" — the name Goldrajch attaching to her only when the papers for her wedding were drawn.[^znanie] Her marriage to **Abram Sztajnzalc** of Głusk, celebrated in Bychawa on 18 December 1822, is the most fully documented episode of her life, because the couple could produce no birth certificates and the registrar had therefore to assemble a thick supporting file — a set of *allegata* — before the union could be entered. Read in order, those attachments open a window onto the young woman of nineteen and the family that stood behind her. The first of them speaks for Dwojra directly: her **Akt Znania** (act of notoriety), a sworn recognition in which witnesses vouched for the identity and parentage of a person lacking a birth record. Drawn "z strony Dwory Abusiewiczówny Goldrajch Panny" — "on behalf of the maiden Dwora Abusiewiczówna Goldrajch" — it names her as the daughter (*córka*) of Abuś Goldrajch of Bychawa, and it is here, in the recognition act for her own wedding, that the surname Goldrajch is first fastened to her line.[^znanie] The act was then reviewed and confirmed as lawfully drawn by the **Sąd Pokoju Powiatu Lubelskiego** — the Court of the Peace for the Lublin district — under No. 932, signed at Lublin on the very day of the wedding, 18 December 1822.[^jp] Two published **banns** fill in the wider family. The first, No. 60, was proclaimed on Sunday 8 December 1822 in the Abramowice commune, which handled Głusk's civil registration, and it lays out both households in full. On the bride's side it gives her as Dwora Abusiówna, maiden, aged 19 — placing her birth about 1803–1804 — daughter of **Abuś (Abusia) Janklowicz**, *szynkarz*, aged 44, and his wife **Ruchla**, aged 30, a married couple of Bychawa.[^banns] The patronymic *Janklowicz* records that her father was himself a son of Jankiel, and his trade as tavern-keeper is stated plainly. On the groom's side the same banns describe Abram as a bachelor of 18, son of **Leyba** — likewise an innkeeper, entered patronymically as Leyba Abramowicz, about forty — and **Bajla née Manelowicz**, about thirty-six, of Głusk: a weaver-and-innkeeper family of the neighbouring town.[^banns] The second banns, published a week later on 15 December and certified at Abramowice on 16 December 1822, repeat the match between "Abram Leybowicz z Głuska" and "Dwora Abusiówna z Bychawy."[^banns2] The groom's own recognition act completes the file. His **Akt Znania**, No. 965, was executed by the municipal office of Głusk on 5 December 1822, with two Głusk townsmen — Wigdor Furst, of house No. 82, and Leybus Grinfeld, of house No. 92 — swearing that Abram, son of Leyba and Bajla Sztajnzalc, was born in Głusk, was eighteen, and was a bachelor.[^znanie2] With the two recognition acts, the Court of the Peace's confirmation, and the two banns all gathered, the marriage itself was registered as **akta 72** in the Bychawa book — the index entry reading "72. Abram Sztainsalc z Dworą Abusiówną," the groom named as son of Leyba Sztajnzalc of Głusk and Baila, the bride's mother recorded as Ruchla Hofman — and the whole year's register was afterwards reviewed and certified by the Lublin Court of the Peace in 1823.[^marriage] From that marriage the couple built their life in Głusk, the *posad* just south of Lublin where the Sztajnzalc family had its roots, and there Dwojra Jenta bore a large family across the following quarter-century — eleven children are attributed to her, from Eyzyk in 1827 to Sura Bajla in 1849. She outlived her husband by some years and ended her life a widow in the same town. Her death was registered at Głusk on 3/15 November 1881, entered as No. 4 in that year's book: two synagogue functionaries — Judka Goldsztajn, the synagogue servant, aged 55, and Szlema Majer Pizem, the *szames* (beadle), aged 32, both of Głusk — appeared to state that **Dwojra Jenta Sztajnzalc** had died in the *posad* of Głusk on 1/13 November 1881 at eight in the morning, aged eighty, a widow who supported herself as a hired worker, daughter of Abram and Ryfka.[^death] The "Ryfka" of this late entry does not match the "Ruchla" named for her mother across the 1822 documents; the marriage papers, contemporaneous and sworn while her mother was living, are the stronger witness, and the point is set aside in the open questions rather than smoothed over here.[^death] [^marriage]: Marriage record, akta 72, Bychawa, 18 December 1822 (*akta małżeństw*, Polish). Both cannot be checked against a maiden surname here (the death entry gives none). The 1822 documents are contemporaneous with a living mother and should be weighted over the 1881 index-style entry, but the discrepancy is noted rather than resolved. - **Father's patronymic — Jankiel.** The first banns give the bride's father as "Abuś Janklowicz," i.e. Abram son of Jankiel. This is a lead on the generation above [[Abram Abus Goldrajch (b.1783)]] (a possible father "Jankiel Goldrajch" or, pre-surname, "Jankiel"), unproven here. - **Groom's father's surname.** In 1822 the groom's father appears both as "Leyba Rozensalc" (marriage act) and "Leyba Abramowicz" (banns/patronymic) and as "Leyba Sztajnzalc"; the family surname Sztajnzalc/Stajnzalc is the one that fixed. Relevant to [[Abram Stajnzalc (b.1804)]]'s own line, not Dwojra's.
