## Narrative
**Ichiel Michel Hochberger** — before the fixed surname, **"Michel Mędel"** and, by patronymic, **Michel Mendlowicz / Michlowicz** and **Michel Mędel Rabinowicz** ("Michel son of Mendel," his father the rabbi [[Menachem Mendel]]) — was a Jewish burgher and moneylender of [[Łęczna]], born about 1739 and dead there in 1824. He and his wife **Chaia** kept a house in the town and lent and dealt in property across the turn of the century.
He married **Chaia**, recorded in full as **"Chaia Koplowiczówna z Lewitów"** — Chaia, daughter of Kopel, of a Levite (*Lewit*) family, a daughter of [[Jankiel Kopel (b.1720)]]. The couple appear together as early as **1786**, buying a quarter-plot in Łęczna from the widow Maryanna Ciotkowa and her daughter for 180 złp, Michel signing "Michel Rabinowicz Mędlowicz."[^m1786] Their standing was that of small householders who lent on their own credit: in **November 1805** the two of them together borrowed **240 red złoty (ducats)** in cash from the merchant **Chaim Leybowicz Bergierman** — the loan secured, under mutual liability of "husband for wife, wife for husband," on **their own homestead in Łęczna, No. 118** — and both set their hands to the bond, *"Chaia Koplowiczówna z Lewitów"* and *"Chil Michel Mędel Rabinowicz Hochbergier."*[^m201]
The town books also catch him settling his children into property. On **22 May 1805** he brought before the Łęczna town office, and had entered in its books, a deed of the previous November by which his **daughter Mala Michlowna and her husband Fiszel Abrahamowicz Lipszyc** — of sound mind and freely — made over to him, as her father and his father-in-law, **their homestead in the New Town (*Nowe Miasto* / Targowica) of Łęczna** — a plot fronting the New-Town market on the east, bounded by the monastery priest's manor to the south and the homestead of Izrael Herszowicz to the north — for a price fully received.[^m139] He lived into old age in the town, dying at Łęczna on **22 December 1824**, aged about eighty-five.[^mdeath]
His children were [[Jankiel Hochberger (b.1750)]], [[Aron Hochberger (b.1765)]] (who appears in these same books as "Aron Michlowicz Hochberger"), [[Menachem Mendel Hochberger (b.1770)]], [[Herszek Hochberger (b.1792)]], and **[[Mala Hochberger]]** (Mala Michlowna, married Fiszel Abrahamowicz Lipszyc).

## Research
*(your reasoning — preserved across every rebuild)*
**1805–1806 Łęczna notarial register (*Protokół zapisów i transakcji wieczystych*, APL 35/44/0/1/35, jedn. 1753841) — deep-read from the scans 2026-07-06.** Recorded here as **"Chil Michel Mędel Rabinowicz Hochbergier" / "Michel Mendlowicz Hohberger" / "Michel Mędel Mendlowicz."** Identity confirmed by the patronymic (Mendlowicz/Rabinowicz = son of Mendel = his father [[Menachem Mendel]]) + surname Hochberger + Łęczna + wife Chaia.
- **Wife's full recorded name recovered: "Chaia Koplowiczówna z Lewitów"** (Chaia, daughter of Kopel, of a Levite family) — the real name for [[PLACEHOLDER Chaia (d.1838)]]; consistent with her being a daughter of [[Jankiel Kopel (b.1720)]] and the earlier "żyd Koplowy" byname. Act 201, sc.[182](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/1753841?p_p_id=Jednostka&_Jednostka_delta=1&_Jednostka_cur=182).
- **House No. 118, Łęczna** — the couple's homestead, on which they secure the 1805 debt. Act 201.
- **Daughter Mala Michlowna married Fiszel Abrahamowicz Lipszyc** — they cede their Nowe-Miasto homestead to Michel (act 139); Michel also stands surety "for my children" Fiszel Lipszyc + Mała in a 1000-zł kaucya (act 79, sc.[76](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/1753841?p_p_id=Jednostka&_Jednostka_delta=1&_Jednostka_cur=76), reader-flagged — eye-read pending).
- **Creditor Chaim Leybowicz Bergierman** (the loan of act 201) links this family to the Łęczna [[Elo Jankiel Bergierman (b.1771)|Bergierman]] line.
- *(Reader-flagged, eye-read pending: a daughter "Chana Michlowna Hochbergierowna" married to Naftali Hercyk Elbensztein, acts 167 & 182-other; son "Aron Michlowicz Hochberger" as creditor, act ~190/sc.173 — see [[Aron Hochberger (b.1765)]]; "Mędel Michlowicz" / claim-announcements, acts 208–209 — cf. the Open question on [[Menachem Mendel Hochberger (b.1770)]].)*
**1807–1811 notarial register (jedn. 1753843) — reinforced across three more acts.** He + wife Chaia recur donating and selling house-shares to their sons: **act 77** (a 1793 half-house donation to son "Mnachem Mendel Michlowicz," submitted 1808 by son **Aron Michlowicz Hochberger**, sc.[174](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/1753843?p_p_id=Jednostka&_Jednostka_delta=1&_Jednostka_cur=174)); **act 78** (1808 sale of ⅓ of their Rynek house to **Chaim Aria Leybowicz Bergierman**, sc.[178](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/1753843?p_p_id=Jednostka&_Jednostka_delta=1&_Jednostka_cur=178)); **act 128** (1808 donation of half their house to son "Nachim Mędlowicz," submitted by son **Mendel Michlowicz Hochberger** = [[Menachem Mendel Hochberger (b.1770)]], sc.[308](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/1753843?p_p_id=Jednostka&_Jednostka_delta=1&_Jednostka_cur=308)). **These give the wife's family more precisely as "*z Domu Segał*, daughter of the late Jankiel Kopel Segal"** — i.e. the Levite name *Lewit* = **Segal** — so **[[PLACEHOLDER Chaia (d.1838)]] = Chaia Koplowna z Domu Segał**, daughter of [[Jankiel Kopel (b.1720)]] (Jankiel Kopel Segal). Sons **Aron** and **Mendel Michlowicz** both confirmed here as his sons acting for him. Extraction: [[Łęczna - 1807-1811 - Protokół transakcji wieczystych 1753843]].

*1786 (17 Dec) — Starozakonny **Michel Mędlowicz** and **wife Chaia** buy a quarter-plot from the widow Maryanna Ciotkowa & daughter Wiktoria for 180 złp; he signs "**Michel Rabinowicz Mędlowicz**" with a Hebrew signature. Confirms Ichiel Michel Hochberger's pre-surname name **"Michel Mendlowicz"** (Michel son of Mendel — father [[Menachem Mendel]]; also cited in [[PLACEHOLDER Chaia (d.1838)]]'s bio) and his marriage to Chaia (a daughter of [[Jankiel Kopel (b.1720)]] — he is elsewhere styled "żyd Koplowy," Kopel's Jew). ## Open questions
- **A "Mendel Michlowicz" and a "rabbi Mendel" of Łęczna in the *Akta Miasta* 1716–1810 (APL 35/44, jednostka [1753829](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/1753829)) — candidate for his son [[Menachem Mendel Hochberger (b.1770)]], unproven.** *Michlowicz* = **son of Michel** — and the subject is Ichiel **Michel** Hochberger. The Łęczna Jewish citizenship register admits a **Mendel Michlowicz** in 1789 ([scan 67](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/1753829?p_p_id=Jednostka&_Jednostka_delta=1&_Jednostka_cur=67)) and names a **rabbi Mendel** (Jełkowicz/Jełowicz) of Łęczna active 1789 ([scan 69](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/1753829?p_p_id=Jednostka&_Jednostka_delta=1&_Jednostka_cur=69)). His son **[[Menachem Mendel Hochberger (b.1770)]]** would be "Mendel son of Michel" = **Mendel Michlowicz**, ~19 in 1789 — a plausible fit; and [[Jankiel Kopel (b.1720)]]'s bio flags a "Mendel Michlowicz Hochberger, rabbi of Łęczna" as a possible son-in-law of that family. **Strong, near-certain identification** that the book's Mendel Michlowicz / rabbi Mendel is his son [[Menachem Mendel Hochberger (b.1770)]] (recorded on his profile) — four axes align plus the vault's pre-existing "Mendel Michlowicz Hochberger, rabbi of Łęczna." Documentary confirmation still wanted. Full extraction: [[Łęczna - 1716-1810 - Akta Miasta]].
