## Narrative
*bio: full · updated 2026-07-06*
Srul Hochberger was born in [[Łęczna]] about 1820, a son of [[Herszek Hochberger (b.1792)]] and [[Fajga Mala Wajnberger (b.1787)]] — of the town's old Hochberger line (descended from [[Ichiel Michel Hochberger (b.1739)]]). He was a **Łęczna house-owner**: by 1847 he and a fellow Hochberger — his *wspólnik* (co-owner), named in the petition **"Berek / Berko Hochberger"** — **jointly owned the house at No. 128 on ulica Stara (Old Street)**. (The record's name is *Berek/Berko*, not *Boruch*, so whether this co-owner is Srul's vault brother [[Boruch Szloma Hochberger (b.1818)]] is unproven — see Open questions.) When the town, rebuilding after the great fire of November 1846, drew up a street-regulation plan that would requisition their plot to widen the street, Srul petitioned the **Governor of the Lublin Governorate** (30 April 1847), pressing the brothers' full ownership of the house against the taking.[^h128] In the following decade he took a turn as one of the town's small tax-farmers: on **10/22 January 1856** he signed a contract with the Łęczna Magistrate leasing the **Economic-Cash-office income from the town's Christian and Jewish inns** (*dochód z Oberż Chrześcijańskich i Żydowskich*) — the fee levied on innkeepers and restaurateurs (*oberżyści, traktiernicy*) during the town fairs — for **three years, 1856–1858, at 32 roubles 50 kopecks a year**, and he set his own name to it, *"Srul Hochbergier."*[^inn] Nearly twenty years after the house-128 petition the same man still held property in the town: the 1866 Łęczna liquidation table lists him at household **№241** in the Jewish residents' section.[^liq] He married [[Sura Dwoyra Helman (b.1824)]] and later [[Gitla Pesa Finkelsztejn (b.1825)]], and raised a family of five in Łęczna.

## Research
*(your reasoning — preserved across every rebuild)*
**1856 — lessee of the Łęczna inn-tax income (*Miasto Łęczna* vol. IX, jedn. 17742786), deep-read from the scans 2026-07-06.** On 10/22 Jan 1856 "**Starozakonny Srul Hochberger**" contracted with the Łęczna Magistrate for the 3-year lease (1856–58, Rs 32.50/yr) of the Economic-Cash income from the town's Christian and Jewish inns (the fair-time innkeeper/restaurateur fees), **signing it himself "Srul Hochbergier"** (sc.[133](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/17742786?p_p_id=Jednostka&_Jednostka_delta=1&_Jednostka_cur=133)–[134](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/17742786?p_p_id=Jednostka&_Jednostka_delta=1&_Jednostka_cur=134)). Given name **Srul** (autograph) — confirmed the same man (a reader index misread it "Saul Dawid"; the signature reads *Srul*). Recorded spelling: **Hochbergier** (a vol IX variant of Hochberger). Ties his life-record between the 1847 house-128 petition and the 1866 table.
**1847 — co-owner of Łęczna house No. 128 (ul. Stara).** In an AGAD town-administration volume, "**Srul Hochberger**, together with **Berek Hochberger**," petitions the Lublin Governor (30 Apr 1847) as **joint owners of the house at No. 128 on ulica Stara**, whose plot the post-fire street-regulation plan proposed to take for widening (jedn 17742785, sc.182, verified by eye). Given + surname + Łęczna + era match this man (Srul) exactly. His earliest known record, ~19 years before the 1866 liquidation table. Extraction: [[Łęczna - 1841-1852 - Miasto Łęczna vol VIII]].
**Co-owner "Berek / Berko Hochberger" — candidate, NOT confirmed as Boruch.** The petition reads *"Podpisany razem z Berkiem Hochberger … Wspólnik mój Berko Hochberger"* — the co-owner's given name is **Berek / Berko**, not *Boruch*. So although a co-owner sharing the house and surname is suggestive of a brother, this is **not** a proven identity with Srul's vault brother [[Boruch Szloma Hochberger (b.1818)]]: *Berek ≠ Boruch* on the record's own wording. Left as a candidate/open question, not folded into Boruch Szloma's profile as a match.

## Open questions
- **Who is "Berek / Berko Hochberger," Srul's co-owner of house No. 128 (1847)?** The petition names him *Berek/Berko*, not *Boruch* — so he is **not** identifiable as Srul's vault brother [[Boruch Szloma Hochberger (b.1818)]] on the name alone (Berek ≠ Boruch). Candidate lead only: a Hochberger co-owning Srul's house is plausibly a brother, but needs a record that actually names *Boruch*, or a "Berek/Ber Hochberger" born ~1818 in the vault, to resolve. jedn 17742785 sc.[182](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/17742785?p_p_id=Jednostka&_Jednostka_delta=1&_Jednostka_cur=182).
