The family moved to Brooklyn in 1950. There I attended Brooklyn College (BS, 1960), met and married Eileen Reifler in 1960. We have two children, Raanan (b. 1962) and Chari (b. 1965). I then entered Purdue Unversity and earned an MS and Ph.D. (microbiology/parasitology) in 1963 and 1966. Following an NIH postdoctoral fellowship at Rice University from 1966-1968, I joined the Biology Department at SUNY Buffalo State from 1968-2006. I am now an "Emeritus Professor". I taught courses in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Invertebrate Zoology, Parasitology, and Immunology. My research was in the area of host-parasite interactions at the molecular-genetic level. A highlight of my career was the discovery of the mechanism by which the liver fluke, Fasciola, a common worm parasite, becomes established in the liver. We found that the amino acid, proline, released in large amounts by juvenile liver flukes, stimulates enlargement of the bile duct. This enlargement allows the worms to enter the duct and to feed on the tissue of the bile duct wall. I am grateful for grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation that supported my research. I am also thankful for the many excellent and devoted students who shared my enthusiasm research on parasites. I hope that the experiences they had in my laboratory had a positive influence on their lives. My biggest regret is that I did not have more time to spend with my children when they were growing up. I spent too much of my time in the lab and writing grants. **📸 Media — from MyHeritage** ![[I500263_1.jpg|180]] *GEDCOM I500263 · Bernstein tree · synced 2026-07-01* <!-- AUTO:END --> ## Research *(your reasoning — preserved across every rebuild)* ## Evidence ## Open questions
