## Narrative
Yosef Iserov belongs to the family's **Podolian** branch β the Iserov / Isseroff line of the shtetls of the Russian southwest, a world apart from the ΕΔczna and Lublin lines that fill most of the tree. He was born on **27 January 1841** (17 Shvat 5601) in the town of **[[Novokostyantyniv]]**, in the Litin district of Podolia gubernia, the son of [[Avrum Iserov (b.1818)]] and [[Rukhlya Chmelnicky Auerbach (b.1818)]].[^birth] Following the commandment, he was circumcised eight days later, on 3 February (24 Shvat).[^birth] His brother [[Moshe Leizer Iserov (b.1839)]] had been born two years before.
He married [[Beyla Horodenka (d.1894)]], and their children carried the line onward β [[Shimshon Aryeh Iserov (b.1864)]], through whom the direct descent runs, and [[Bina Isseroff (b.1884)]]. The record loses sight of him after 1888; his date and place of death are not established.
His birth is preserved in the bilingual metrical register of Novokostyantyniv, kept β as such Russian-Empire Jewish registers were β in parallel Russian and Hebrew columns. The Russian side sets him down plainly: born 27 January in the town of Novokostyantynov, father Iserov, mother **Rukhla**; the Hebrew side records the same birth in the Jewish calendar.[^birth]
[^birth]: Birth record, metrical book of **Novokostyantyniv** (Litin uyezd, Podolia gubernia), **ΠΠΠ₯ΠΌΠ 227-1-3831**, entry M3 (image 106), read directly from both the Russian- and Hebrew-language pages of the scan. Records the birth of **Yosef ("Ios") Iserov** on **27 January 1841** (17 Shvat), circumcised **3 February** (24 Shvat), in Novokostyantynov; father **Avrum Iserov**, mother **Rukhla** (Rukhlya). Confirmed by the JewishGen index of the same register (ISIROV, Ios; father Avrum; mother Rukhlya; 27-Jan-1841; Novokostyantinov, Litin, Podol). (The Hebrew-side cursive is faint; the Russian column and JewishGen index carry the confident reading.)
## Research
- **Birth, 1841, Novokostyantyniv (metrical register ΠΠΠ₯ΠΌΠ 227-1-3831, entry M3).** Read directly (both Russian and Hebrew pages). **Yosef ("Ios") Iserov**, born **27 January 1841** (17 Shvat), circumcised **3 February** (24 Shvat), in Novokostyantynov, Litin uyezd, Podolia; father **Avrum Iserov**, mother **Rukhla**. Cross-confirmed by the JewishGen index. Register image: [227-1-3831, img 106](https://data.jewishgen.org/imagedata/ukraine/Letichev_district%2F227-1-3831%2F106.jpg).
- **Parentage** confirmed by the birth register: son of **Avrum** ([[Avrum Iserov (b.1818)]]) and **Rukhla/Rukhlya** ([[Rukhlya Chmelnicky Auerbach (b.1818)]]).
- **Recorded name forms:** Yosef / Ios (Russian register) Β· surname Iserov / Isirov / Isserov / Isseroff.
- **Place note:** the JewishGen index files this under Litin uyezd; the vault's born_place records Novokostyantyniv (Podolia) more generally.
## Evidence
- **1841 birth register (Novokostyantyniv, ΠΠΠ₯ΠΌΠ 227-1-3831)** β bilingual Russian/Hebrew metrical book recording Yosef Iserov's birth (27 Jan 1841), father Avrum, mother Rukhla. His own birth record; fixes his birth date, place, and parents.

## Open questions
- **Death.** "After 1888" only β no death date or place is documented. A later Podolian record (revision list, family list, or a child's marriage) may fix it.
- **Litin vs Letychiv.** The JewishGen index places Novokostyantyniv in Litin uyezd; confirm the exact district against the register's title page.
- **Beyond the birth record**, Yosef's adult life (occupation, residence, his marriage to Beyla Horodenka) is undocumented here; Podolian marriage or census records would flesh it out.
