## Narrative
Josef Mendelsberg was born on 13 April 1812, in house No. 230 in [[Łęczna]], and lived and died in that town — a merchant, like his father before him. He was the son of [[Zelik Mendelsberg (b.1783)]], the Łęczna leaseholder, and [[Frajda Edelsztajn (b.1785)]] — and so a grandson, on his mother's side, of the substantial Łęczna burgher [[Rubin Edelsztajn (b.1744)]].[^birth] Both his parents had died young: his father Zelik died in 1813, the year after Josef's birth, a day after his mother's own mother, so that Josef grew up an orphan of the Mendelsberg–Edelsztajn family.[^orphan]
At twenty-one he married. The act was drawn at [[Żółkiewka]] on 10 May 1833 before the assistant rabbi Gdala Rozenblat: "Josef Mandelbarg," a bachelor of twenty-two, a merchant, "born in the city of Łęczna… of the legitimate parents Zelik and Frajda née Rubin Mandelbarg, already deceased," married **[[Prywa Szajman (b.1808)]]**, aged twenty-one, born in Żółkiewka to Moszka and Laja Szajman.[^marriage] The witnesses who stood with the couple carry the family's connections plainly: present at the wedding was **Chaim Edelsztein, named the maternal uncle of Josef** — that is [[Chaim Edelsztajn (b.1779)]], Frajda's brother and Rubin Edelsztajn's son — together with the bride's father Moszka Szajman; the record was witnessed by Haskiel Winer, a synagogue caretaker of forty-seven, and the merchant Icek Haskiel Szajman.[^marriage]
Josef and Prywa raised a large Łęczna family across two decades — [[Zelik Mendelsberg (b.1835)]] (named for Josef's late father), [[Ela Mendelsberg (b.1837)]], [[Ayzyk Hersz Mendelsberg (b.1840)]], [[Izrael Chaim Mendelsberg (b.1841)]], [[Szloma Lejbusa Mendelsberg (b.1844)]], [[Abram Mendelsberg (b.1847)]], [[Laja Frajdla Mendelsberg (b.1849)]], [[Szulim Mendelsberg (b.1852)]] and [[Marya Brandla Mendelsberg (b.1855)]].[^children] Through his daughter [[Laja Frajdla Mendelsberg (b.1849)]] — who married into the Balter family — his line runs down to Ozzy.[^kin] Josef Mendelsberg died in Łęczna on 7 August 1891, aged seventy-nine.[^death]
[^birth]: Birth record, akt No. 36 (family MyHeritage biography): born 13 April 1812, house No. 230, [[Łęczna]]; parents [[Zelik Mendelsberg (b.1783)]] and [[Frajda Edelsztajn (b.1785)]]. [^orphan]: His parents [[Zelik Mendelsberg (b.1783)]] and [[Frajda Edelsztajn (b.1785)]] both predeceased his 1833 marriage (the marriage act calls them "already deceased"); Zelik died in 1813 (see his profile). Frajda was a daughter of [[Rubin Edelsztajn (b.1744)]], making Josef Rubin's grandson.
[^marriage]: Marriage record, [[Żółkiewka]], 10 May 1833 (translation on the profile, family MyHeritage biography). Assistant rabbi Gdala Rozenblat. Groom "Josef Mandelbarg," bachelor aged 22, merchant, "born in the city of Łęczna… of the legitimate parents Zelik and Frajda née Rubin Mandelbarg, already deceased"; bride "Prywa Szajman," aged 21, born Żółkiewka of Moszka and Laja Szajman. **Present: "Chaim Edelsztein, maternal uncle of Josef" (= [[Chaim Edelsztajn (b.1779)]], brother of Josef's mother Frajda), and Moszka Szajman, the bride's father.** Witnesses: Haskiel Winer (synagogue caretaker, 47) and Icek Haskiel Szajman (merchant, 41), both of Żółkiewka. Banns 20 April, 4 & 11 May, in the Łęczna and Żółkiewka synagogues. (Marriage image on the profile.) This is the record that documents Chaim Edelsztajn as brother of Frajda Edelsztajn.
[^children]: Children per the GEDCOM/MyHeritage record: [[Zelik Mendelsberg (b.1835)]], [[Ela Mendelsberg (b.1837)]], [[Ayzyk Hersz Mendelsberg (b.1840)]], [[Izrael Chaim Mendelsberg (b.1841)]], [[Szloma Lejbusa Mendelsberg (b.1844)]], [[Abram Mendelsberg (b.1847)]], [[Laja Frajdla Mendelsberg (b.1849)]], [[Szulim Mendelsberg (b.1852)]], [[Marya Brandla Mendelsberg (b.1855)]].

(Josef also relates as a 4x great-grand-uncle via a second, intermarried line — see the paths on this profile.)
[^death]: Died 7 August 1891, [[Łęczna]] (GEDCOM/MyHeritage). Death record akt No. 22 [scan](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/7d311ab59db901c1be1a6d29fb146493a63e6544dabe50d7ce9d3d44b9c56509) (not yet read directly).
## Research
*(your reasoning — preserved across every rebuild)*
- **1833 marriage record (Żółkiewka) translated on the profile** — Josef Mandelbarg, 22, merchant, born Łęczna, son of the late Zelik + Frajda née Rubin; married Prywa Szajman, 21, of Żółkiewka. **⭐ Names "Chaim Edelsztein, maternal uncle of Josef"** = [[Chaim Edelsztajn (b.1779)]], confirming Chaim as brother of Josef's mother [[Frajda Edelsztajn (b.1785)]] (both children of [[Rubin Edelsztajn (b.1744)]]) — the documentary basis for that sibling link.
- **Descent + surname:** merchant of Łęczna; surname recorded "Mandelbarg / Mendelsberg." Son of [[Zelik Mendelsberg (b.1783)]] (the model footnote profile). Direct-line daughter [[Laja Frajdla Mendelsberg (b.1849)]].
