## Narrative
Shmuel Segal — R. Shmuel ha-Levi — was the rabbinic ancestor at the head of this Levite line, and the grandfather of [[Issakhar Berisz Segal (b.1690)]]. Born about 1650, said to be in Ludmir (Volodymyr) in Volhynia, he held the office of av beit din — chief of the rabbinic court — of Międzyrzec and of Rzeszów, and he died at Rzeszów on 22 December 1718.[^office] He was the son of [[Avraham Segal (b.1625)]], R. Abraham ha-Levi, and married Elka; his son [[Yehoshua Segal (d.1732)]] carried the line and the rabbinate eastward, to Dobromil, Ciechanowiec and Siemiatycze, and from Yehoshua it passed to Issachar Berisz and down, through [[Szyia Segal (b.1740)]], to Ozzy.[^line]
His standing is preserved in the family's printed genealogy rather than in any surviving act of his own. There he appears as "R. Samuel ha-Levi, av beit din of Międzyrzec and Rzeszów," the son-in-law of R. Yitzhak the Great (ha-Gadol); and his father R. Abraham ha-Levi is recorded, in turn, as son-in-law of R. Yehoshua of Kraków — the rosh yeshiva and author of *Meginei Shlomo* and the responsa *Pnei Yehoshua* — placing this Levite family, within two generations, in the orbit of one of the great seventeenth-century Kraków rabbinic houses.[^genealogy]
[^office]: Av beit din of Międzyrzec and of Rzeszów; born ~1650 (frontmatter: Ludmir/Volodymyr), died Rzeszów 22 December 1718 (GEDCOM/MyHeritage). No record of his own has been read on this profile; the offices are given by the family genealogy (see [^genealogy]).
[^line]: Son of [[Avraham Segal (b.1625)]] (R. Abraham ha-Levi) and [[Elka (5)]]; father of [[Yehoshua Segal (d.1732)]] (av beit din of Dobromil / Ciechanowiec / Siemiatycze), grandfather of [[Issakhar Berisz Segal (b.1690)]]. The direct line continues Issachar Berisz → [[Szyia Segal (b.1740)]] → [[Icek Balter (b.1771)]] → the Balter family.
[^genealogy]: *Daat liNevonim* genealogy (read via [[Issakhar Berisz Segal (b.1690)]]'s sources — [Google Books, p.12](https://www.google.com/books/edition/%D7%A1%D7%A4%D7%A8_%D7%93%D7%A2%D7%AA_%D7%9C%D7%A0%D7%91%D7%95%D7%A0%D7%99%D7%9D/sY2uQiOlQnMC?hl=en&gbpv=1&pg=PA12)): "R. Samuel ha-Levi, av beit din of Międzyrzec and Rzeszów, was the son-in-law of R. Yitzhak ha-Gadol, son of R. Abraham [ha-Levi]"; and "R. Abraham ha-Levi… was the son-in-law of R. Yehoshua, ABD of Lviv and rosh yeshiva of Kraków, author of *Meginei Shlomo* and *Shut Pnei Yehoshua*, who died in Kraków 27 Av 5408 [1648]."
## Research
*(your reasoning — preserved across every rebuild)*
- **Bio (stub) written 2026-07-06** from the *Daat liNevonim* genealogy (read directly via [[Issakhar Berisz Segal (b.1690)]]'s sources) + profile vitals. No record of Shmuel's own has been read; his offices (ABD Międzyrzec & Rzeszów) and his ancestry (father R. Abraham ha-Levi, son-in-law of R. Yehoshua of Kraków / *Meginei Shlomo*) come from the printed family genealogy.
## Evidence
## Open questions
- **No primary record of Shmuel himself read.** Rzeszów/Międzyrzec rabbinic lists, a matzevah at Rzeszów (d. 22 Dec 1718), or his own haskamot would independently anchor the offices and dates.
- **"Ludmir" birthplace** (frontmatter) unverified.
- **The Kraków connection** (father Abraham ha-Levi as son-in-law of the *Meginei Shlomo* author) is worth confirming against Wunder, *Me'orei Galicia*, and the *Meginei Shlomo* / *Pnei Yehoshua* family literature.
