## Narrative
Chaim Winer was a shopkeeper of [[Bełżyce]], the small Lublin-region town where he was born, lived his whole life, and died. He was the son of [[Uszer Winer (b.1740)]] and [[Zlota (b.1742)]] — a Levite family: in his son Herszek's birth record he signs himself "Chaim bar Asher ha-Levi," Asher being the Hebrew of his father's name Uszer, and his patronymic in the civil registers is accordingly "Osiorowicz," son of Osior/Uszer.[^parents][^belzyce] His surname was not yet fixed in one form. Across the records he is "Winer," but also "Osiorowicz" by patronymic and, in his 1826 marriage act, "**Wiedeński**" — literally "the Viennese" — one of the interchangeable surnames a Jewish townsman of his generation still carried before the name settled.[^marriage][^belzyce]
His trade is given plainly in the record: a *kramarz*, a shopkeeper or stallholder, "resident in Bełżyce."[^marriage] He married more than once. His first wife was [[Chawa Lax (b.1781)]], of the Bełżyce Lax family; later came [[Chaja Lebensohn (b.1795)]] and [[Maryanka Wolwowa (b.1759)]]. The marriage to Maryanna is the one caught in full in the civil register: on 17 April 1826, before Icek Dawidowicz Rubin, the religious official at the Bełżyce synagogue, "Chaim Wiedeński, *kramarz*… born here in Bełżyce of the spouses Uszer and Złota, both deceased in Bełżyce," married Maryanna, a widow of about fifty-eight — the act naming his parents and confirming him a native of the town.[^marriage] From his marriages came a large family of Bełżyce Winers: [[Moszek Winer (b.1802)]], [[Manas Winer (b.1807)]], [[Herszek Osiorowicz (b.1810)]], [[Nesia Winer (b.1811)]], [[Josek Winer (b.1814)]], [[Jankiel Srul Winer (b.1816)]], [[Zelik Winer (b.1816)]], [[Szulim Winer (b.1818)]], [[Sura Bajla Winer (b.1820)]] and [[Ruchla Zlota Winer (b.1825)]].[^children]
He was a settled member of the Bełżyce Jewish community and took part in its communal life. When the community built its new Jewish cemetery in 1829 and raised money for a wooden fence around it, Chaim Winer was among the subscribers: his name and signature — "Chaim Winer," in Latin script and in Hebrew — stand on the 1829 contribution list, and he gave ten złoty toward the fence, a small act of communal charity that fixes him among the town's contributing householders.[^cemetery] The same list carries the signature of Hersz Lax, of the family into which he had first married.[^cemetery]
Chaim Winer died in Bełżyce on 1 March 1850.[^death]
[^parents]: Son of [[Uszer Winer (b.1740)]] and [[Zlota (b.1742)]] — confirmed independently by his 1826 marriage act (below), which names him "born… of the spouses Uszer and Złota." A Levite family: he signs "Chaim bar Asher ha-Levi" in his son [[Herszek Osiorowicz (b.1810)]]'s birth record (family MyHeritage biography); civil patronymic "Osiorowicz" (son of Osior/Uszer).
[^belzyce]: Name-forms across the records: **Winer** (standard), **Osiorowicz** (patronymic, son of Uszer/Osior), **Wiedeński** ("the Viennese," in the 1826 marriage act), and the Hebrew signature "Chaim bar Asher ha-Levi." Family MyHeritage biography and the records cited here.
[^marriage]: Marriage act, Bełżyce, 17 April 1826, akt No. 5 (read directly from the full-resolution scan; Polish court-hand, best-effort). Names his parents and fixes him a Bełżyce native. [scan](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/68555e6a0b663d9a6f05fab41a86102b593d987e9cd897fd34e23f76bfd415bc)

## Research
*(your reasoning — preserved across every rebuild)*
- **Records read directly 2026-07-06** (szukajwarchiwach full-res, Bełżyce; Polish court-hand, best-effort):
- **1826 marriage act No. 5** — "Chaim **Wiedeński** Kramarz," born Bełżyce of **Uszer and Złota** (both deceased), marries the widow **Maryanna** (~58). Confirms parents = [[Uszer Winer (b.1740)]] + [[Zlota (b.1742)]] and the "Wiedeński" surname variant. (This is his marriage to [[Maryanka Wolwowa (b.1759)]].)
- **1829 cemetery-fence contribution list** — "Chaim Winer" signs (Latin + Hebrew), among the Bełżyce Jewish householders; **Hersz Lax** (his first wife [[Chawa Lax (b.1781)]]'s family) also signs.
- **Name-forms:** Winer / Osiorowicz (patronymic) / Wiedeński / Hebrew "Chaim bar Asher ha-Levi." A **Levite** line (ha-Levi).
- Still to deep-read: the **3rd-marriage act No. 4** (downloaded, not yet transcribed) and the two death-record images in the gallery.

## Open questions
- **Birth year — ~1775 vs ~1758.** Frontmatter carries ~1775, but the 1826 marriage act gives his age as **68** (→ ~1758). Ages in these acts are often loose, but the gap is large; the death record (1850) and any birth/other act should be checked to settle it.
- **3rd-marriage act No. 4** (scan downloaded, not yet read) — to identify which wife and confirm details. [scan](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/c34203705fb69d452f1ae090abf1d73153673e62ba105829402b8b357cdfb9d4)
- **Order of the three marriages** (Chawa Lax → Chaja Lebensohn → Maryanka Wolwowa) not yet firmly sequenced against the children's birth years.
- **Additional MyHeritage-bio scan leads (not yet read/incorporated; preserved 2026-07-06):** https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/d5eb389c6a192cc734e8b695f12f2b7db0044ca9b4010fa872712d3165f66f0d
