## Narrative
Uszer Winer was born about **1740** and lived in [[Bełżyce]], a small private town in the Lublin region southwest of the city of Lublin. Like everyone of his generation in the town's Jewish community, he carried no fixed surname in the records of his own lifetime — *Winer* is the later family name, and the town's manorial rent books know him only by his given name in its several clerk's spellings: **Oszer, Oscer, Ozier, Ozer, Osior**. He was the son of [[Manas Zelik]] and married [[Zlota (b.1742)]], daughter of the Bełżyce lessee [[Ayzyk Kłodnicki (b.1720)]].
His entry into the record is his marriage into Ayzyk's household, and the rent ledgers catch it happening. In the **1769** register — the *regestr czynszu... od Żydów*, the ground-rent owed by the town's Jews to the estate treasury — Ayzyk Kłodnicki stands alone, assessed at 13 złotych, with no son-in-law beside him.[^1769] In the **1770** roll a new line appears directly beneath Ayzyk's: **"Oscer, zięć jego"** — Oscer, his son-in-law — rated at just **1 złoty 15 groszy**, the modest sum of a newly-formed dependent household.[^1770] His absence in 1769 and this first appearance in 1770 place the wedding to [[Zlota (b.1742)]], born about 1742, in the narrow interval **1769–1770**.[^1770] The pairing holds: in **1771** he is again entered on the line below Ayzyk as **"Ozier zięć jego,"** the same 1 zł 15 gr.[^1771] And in the **1772** register the clerk sorts him explicitly among the ***komornicy*** — the lodgers, householders living under another man's roof without a hearth of their own — as **"Ozer, zięć Ayzyka,"** still at 1 zł 15 gr.[^1772] For these years the young man who had married in is taxed one line from his father-in-law, living inside his house.
A **1766 contract** in the Bełżyce records may reach one generation further back, though the identification is not certain. In that year a communal agreement was drawn up between **Osior Bendykowicz** — "a member of the Jewish community" — and the **Kahał of Bełżyce**, the town's Jewish communal council, represented by its elders Jozef Pryszkowicz and Lewek Berkowicz. In it Osior declared that a garden by the **Zapłotnia road** (the lane "behind the fences"), bordered by other gardens and a public way, had belonged *ab antiquo* — from old times — to his father, **Bendyk Fraimowicz**.[^kahal1766] Whether this Osior Bendykowicz is the same man as the son-in-law of the rent rolls is not established: the 1766 document identifies him by his own father (Bendyk son of Fraim), while the ledgers identify Uszer only through his father-in-law Ayzyk, so the two cannot be squared without further evidence. If it is him, it would set his father as Bendyk Fraimowicz and place the family's roots in Bełżyce back into the earlier eighteenth century — a possibility, not a proof.
Uszer had died **before 1812**. Among the later Bełżyce records is the 1813 death of a **Wolf Osiorowicz**, aged 76 — a patronymic ("son of Osior") that would fit a son of Uszer, though a stated age of 76 in 1813 (birth ~1737) points to a man of Uszer's own generation, which argues against a father–son link; on the index entry alone it is no more than a lead to weigh.[^wolf] His known children in the family tree are [[Chaim Winer (b.1775)]] and [[PLACEHOLDER Lejbus Rozenfarb (b.1777)]].
[^1769]: 1769 Bełżyce ground-rent register, *"Regestr Czynszu wybranego za Rok 1769 z miasta Bełżyc od Żydów":* Ayzyk Kłodnicki entered at 13 złotych, standing alone with no son-in-law beside him — Uszer is not yet in the roll: [scan](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/caa4b2e44fcebfae131beb1700568d11e9283ff47bcb8faed5275bdb41914076).
[^1770]: 1770 Bełżyce rent ledger, *"Dalszy wybor Czynszu od Żydów za Rok 1770":* directly below "Ayzyk Kłodnicki — 13" appears, for the first time, **"Oscer zięć jego — 1 zł 15 gr"** (Oscer, his son-in-law): [scan](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/7ac968f1ab347fb856d3755a04a6db91317711c89358ee30df31527a618809d1). His absence in 1769 and appearance here dates the marriage to [[Zlota (b.1742)]] to ~1769–1770.
[^1771]: 1771 Bełżyce rent register, *"Regestr... Czynszu należącego z Miasta... 1771, a naprzod od Żydów":* **"Ozier zięć jego — 1 zł 15 gr,"** entered on the line below his father-in-law [[Ayzyk Kłodnicki (b.1720)]] (13 zł): [scan](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/5a5c84033436735b53dbab1847b14bdcd9f5b4b088d0a5ada488aab2875996a5).
[^1772]: 1772 Bełżyce register (continuation page), *"Dalszy wybor Czynszu od Żydów"* under a subsection headed **"Komornicy"** (lodgers): **"Ozer zięć Ayzyka — 1 zł 15 gr,"** listed among householders living in another's household: [scan](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/bc5f2552e52cb4d46052f2ac17e9a069fa7aa368a8b480b3afb2a769af038bd6). Identified as Uszer per the MyHeritage biography on this profile; father-in-law [[Ayzyk Kłodnicki (b.1720)]].
[^kahal1766]: [1766 Bełżyce contract](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/b59d5a831240d17389dc6684bf0c7300b5cf08dd4efc7313fc1728a14500c4b2) between Osior Bendykowicz and the Kahał of Bełżyce (elders Jozef Pryszkowicz and Lewek Berkowicz), concerning a garden by the Zapłotnia road held *ab antiquo* by his father Bendyk Fraimowicz; the identification of this Osior with Uszer is not established (see ## Open questions).
[^wolf]: [1813 Bełżyce death record #135](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/skan/-/skan/a3defb42a062277fb30abad0f1c85ca5385b8baa05a14a9d9530be1e6057de8a) for Wolf Osiorowicz, died aged 76; the patronymic "Osiorowicz" (son of Osior) makes him a possible son of Uszer, but age 76 in 1813 (b. ~1737) places him in Uszer's own generation — unproven on the index entry alone (see ## Open questions).
## Research
*(your reasoning — preserved across every rebuild)*
**Bełżyce ground-rent ledgers — Uszer's entries (deep-read 2026-07-06).** Uszer appears in the Bełżyce manorial *czynsz* (ground-rent) registers only as the son-in-law of his father-in-law [[Ayzyk Kłodnicki (b.1720)]], always on the line directly beneath Ayzyk, at the small dependent sum of **1 złoty 15 groszy**:

- **Marriage dated ~1769–1770.** Uszer is absent from the 1769 roll and first appears beneath Ayzyk in 1770; this brackets his marriage to Ayzyk's daughter [[Zlota (b.1742)]].
- **Household status.** His low 1 zł 15 gr assessment (vs Ayzyk's 13 zł) and his 1772 placement among the *komornicy* (lodgers, without their own hearth) show him living within his father-in-law's household in these years, not yet an independent taxpayer. The rent rolls give him no trade-byname of his own.
- **Name forms in these records:** Oscer (1770), Ozier (1771), Ozer (1772) — all clerk's renderings of Oszer/Uszer.
## Evidence
## Open questions
- **Is Osior Bendykowicz (1766 Kahał contract) the same man as Uszer?** The [1766 contract](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/b59d5a831240d17389dc6684bf0c7300b5cf08dd4efc7313fc1728a14500c4b2) identifies its subject by his own father (Bendyk Fraimowicz), whereas the rent ledgers identify Uszer only through his father-in-law Ayzyk. If confirmed, this would set Uszer's father as Bendyk Fraimowicz and his grandfather as Fraim — but the equation is unproven. Cross-check against the frontmatter father [[Manas Zelik]], which it does not obviously match.
- **Wolf Osiorowicz (d. 1813, aged 76, akta #135) — candidate son, weak.** The [death record](https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/skan/-/skan/a3defb42a062277fb30abad0f1c85ca5385b8baa05a14a9d9530be1e6057de8a) names a Wolf "son of Osior" in Bełżyce; needs corroboration before treating him as a child of Uszer. Age 76 in 1813 → b. ~1737, essentially Uszer's own generation, which argues against a father–son link and should be weighed carefully.
- **Uszer's own trade/occupation.** The rent rolls tag him only as "zięć" (son-in-law) with no trade-byname of his own; a later record may show what he did once he set up independently.
