After legal restrictions eased in the 19th century its Jewish population grew to roughly 180,000 by the early 20th century — a community central to the city's intellectual and cultural flowering and to the birth of Herzl's political Zionism. Following the 1938 Anschluss, Nazi persecution, the November Pogrom, forced emigration, and deportation destroyed this community; a small community was re-established after the war. Sources: Wikipedia — History of the Jews in Vienna; YIVO Encyclopedia — Vienna. ## People with events here | Person | Event | | --- | --- | | [[Eliezer Isserles (b.1530)]] | Died 07/28/1623 | | [[Julius Berger (b.1888)]] | Born 04/26/1888 | | [[Leon Chajes (b.1828)]] | Died 03/27/1891 | | [[Josef Goldfischer (b.1914)]] | Born 09/21/1914 | | [[Sheindel Szupper (b.1916)]] | Born 08/28/1916 | | [[Gavriel Sternfeld (b.1918)]] | Born 12/13/1918 | | [[Rivka Aliza Eisen (b.1928)]] | Born 02/27/1928 | | [[Shlomo Zalman Alexander Eisen (b.1929)]] | Born 12/09/1929 | | [[Ruth Podheizer (b.1934)]] | Born 1934 | | [[Rena Lipschutz (b.1938)]] | Born 06/23/1938 | | [[Rachel Breindel Weinberger (b.1952)]] | Born 04/14/1952 | | [[David Yaakov Itzkowitz (d.2018)]] | Died 2018 | | [[Meir David Herzog]] | Born | | [[Peter Kastner]] | Born |
