## Overview
Rio de Janeiro, on Brazil's Atlantic coast and the country's former capital, hosts one of Brazil's largest Jewish communities (after São Paulo). Jewish immigration grew from the late 19th century and expanded sharply in the early 20th century with Eastern European (and later Sephardi and Central European refugee) arrivals; the community historically clustered in neighborhoods such as Praça Onze and later the Zona Sul. Rio supports synagogues, schools, and communal federations serving a well-established, mostly Ashkenazi-and-Sephardi community today.
