Its Jewish community, long the second-largest in Canada, grew dramatically with East European immigration from the 1880s, clustering along the Main (Boulevard Saint-Laurent) and in the Plateau and Mile End districts before spreading to areas such as Outremont, Côte-des-Neiges, and Côte Saint-Luc.
