Its Jewish community—now the largest in Canada—grew primarily through East European immigration from the 1880s onward, with newcomers first concentrating in the downtown "Ward" and along Spadina Avenue in the garment district, and later moving north into neighborhoods such as Bathurst Street and the suburbs of North York and Thornhill.
