## Overview
The Jewish community of Szentes was founded in 1800, with its Hevra Kadisha established in 1810; most local Jews were merchants, alongside professionals and some farmers. After the 1869 religious split the community defined itself as Neolog with a strongly assimilationist orientation, and its Great Synagogue was erected in 1905. After German occupation a ghetto was created in May 1944; on 16 June the Jews were taken to a brick factory in Szeged and on 24–26 June deported to Auschwitz or to Austria. About 120 Jews returned after the war, mostly those held in Austria.
