The largely Neolog congregation built a grand Moorish-style synagogue in 1880, designed by the Viennese architect Ludwig Schöne, with the Jewish population peaking around 2,600–3,100 in the early 20th century. After the German occupation of 19 March 1944 the city's Jews, together with Jews from surrounding villages, were ghettoized and deported to Auschwitz in July 1944; of 4,228 deported only a few hundred survived.
