## Overview
Ashdod is a city on Israel's Mediterranean coast in the Southern District, about 32 km south of Tel Aviv. Though the name is ancient — Ashdod was one of the five Philistine city-states — the modern city was founded in 1956 and incorporated in 1968. It is home to Israel's largest seaport and one of the country's largest cities by population, with a substantial community of immigrants from the former Soviet Union and elsewhere.
