## Overview
Bnei Brak was founded in 1924 by Polish Hasidic Jews led by Rabbi Yitzchak Gerstenkorn, and named after the ancient town near which Rabbi Akiva taught. It grew from an agricultural settlement into one of the world's foremost centers of Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) Jewish life, densely populated and organized around its many yeshivas, Hasidic courts, and rabbinical institutions. Adjoining Tel Aviv in the Dan metropolitan area, it is today among the most densely populated cities in Israel and a byword for its strictly observant character.
