## Overview
Haifa is Israel's principal northern port city, set on the slopes of Mount Carmel above the Mediterranean. From the late Ottoman and British Mandate periods it developed into a major industrial and shipping center and a key point of Jewish immigration, including much of the "illegal" Aliyah Bet through its harbor. Known for its mixed Jewish and Arab population and relatively coexistent civic life, it is today Israel's third-largest city and home to the Technion and the Bahá'í World Centre.
