It has been a continuous focus of Jewish life and longing for some three thousand years, and by the mid-19th century Jews formed the largest single community in the Old City. Under Ottoman then British Mandate rule it grew rapidly with new neighborhoods outside the walls; today it is the capital of, and largest city in, Israel, seat of the Knesset and a global center of
