## Overview
Safed is a city in the Northern District of Israel, set high in the mountains of the Upper Galilee — the highest city in the country. It became a major center of Jewish life and learning after 1492, when Sephardi refugees settled there, and in the 16th century it flourished as the world capital of Kabbalah, home to Rabbi Isaac Luria (the Ari), Joseph Karo, and Moshe Cordovero. It is counted among Judaism's Four Holy Cities and remains a center of Jewish mysticism and art.
