## Overview
Łódź grew under Congress Poland into Poland's great textile city, the 'Manchester of Poland,' and home to the second-largest Jewish community in interwar Poland (~223,000, about a third of the population, in 1939). After the German occupation of Sept 1939 it was renamed Litzmannstadt and annexed to the Reich; in early 1940 the Nazis established the Łódź Ghetto, the second-largest in occupied Poland — over 200,000 Jews were confined there before deportation to Chełmno and Auschwitz-Birkenau.
