It had a long-established Jewish community that formed the majority of residents in the interwar period, with 2,356 Jews living there before the Holocaust and cultural institutions including a Hebrew 'Tel-Chaim' school (1933) and a Mizrachi 'Yavneh' school (1938). The Germans established a ghetto holding about 2,050 people by May 1942; on 8 June 1942 the Jews were assembled in the market square and most were deported via Miączyn to the Sobibór extermination camp, with the remainder murdered in October 1942.
