Though Jews formed roughly a third of inhabitants, the town center around the marketplace was largely Jewish, with a fortress-like stone synagogue plus Radzyn and artisans' prayer houses; the Yizkor book records about 150 Jewish families, some 1,250 people, in a notably learned community. During the German occupation (1939–1944) the community was destroyed; roughly 1,000 Jews of Horodło and the nearby village of Strzyżów were murdered.
