## Overview
Jewish settlement in Kraków dates to the 13th century, and from the 16th century Kazimierz, the historic Jewish quarter, was a renowned center of Talmudic learning. Under Nazi occupation most of the city's ~68,000 Jews were expelled in 1940, and in March 1941 a ghetto of 15,000–20,000 was established in Podgórze; deportations to Bełżec in 1942 and Auschwitz, with transfers to Płaszów, culminated in the ghetto's liquidation on 13–14 March 1943.
