## Overview
Lubartów was founded as Lewartów on 29 May 1543 by Piotr Firlej, receiving town rights the same year, and was renamed Lubartów in 1744 (the Yiddish name Lewertow preserves the original). It had a large Jewish community — 2,623 Jews in 1897 and 3,269 (53.6%) in 1921. Under occupation the Jews were ghettoized in 1941; in October 1942 the ghetto was liquidated and the community deported, with about 300 shot in the Jewish cemetery and further executions in January 1943, leaving only ~40 survivors.
