## Overview
Majdanek (officially KL Lublin) was a Nazi German concentration and extermination camp built on the south-eastern outskirts of Lublin in German-occupied Poland. Construction began on 1 October 1941 and the first prisoners arrived that November; the camp operated until 22 July 1944. It functioned both as a labour camp and as a killing site, with gas chambers used in the murder of Jews, including during the November 1943 "Operation Harvest Festival" (Aktion Erntefest) massacre. The Majdanek State Museum's 2005 study by Tomasz Kranz established roughly 78,000 victims, about 59,000 of them Jews; older and broader estimates for the whole camp system range higher. Because the SS abandoned the camp hastily as the Red Army approached, Majdanek was captured largely intact on 22–24 July 1944 — the first major Nazi camp liberated. The site is preserved as the State Museum at Majdanek.
