## Overview
A large Jewish community (Yiddish: Mezritsh) existed from the 16th century, with one of Poland's earliest Jewish printing houses founded there in 1595; by the eve of World War II the town of about 20,000 had a Jewish population of roughly 17,000. The ghetto was liquidated in stages in 1942–1943: the first mass deportation on 25–26 August 1942 sent about 10,000 Jews to Treblinka, with later transports to Treblinka and Majdanek and mass shootings on the spot. Only around 200 of the town's Jews survived the Holocaust.
