It lost its town rights in 1864 under the Russian government and regained them in 1919. The town lies about 34 km (21 mi) northeast of Lublin. Its Jewish community numbered roughly 1,000 around 1900 and formed a high share of the population by 1930; during the German occupation the entire Jewish population was murdered in the Holocaust. Their history is recorded in the memorial book *Sefer Yizkor Ostrów-Lubelski* (ed.
