Under Austrian Galicia and then interwar Poland it became a major Jewish centre; a fortress-style synagogue was completed in the 1590s, and by 1939 roughly 20,000 Jews lived there, about a third to 40% of the population. After the German occupation the community was confined to a ghetto (established 1942) and largely destroyed through deportations to the Bełżec and Auschwitz extermination camps; only a few hundred Przemyśl Jews are estimated to have survived.
