In 1907 the town had 6,327 inhabitants, of whom 3,735 (about 59%) were Jews, supporting a synagogue, a house of prayer, and two cemeteries. During the German occupation the community was destroyed: in 1942 the local Jews were deported to the Treblinka extermination camp, some via the transit point in the Międzyrzec Podlaski ghetto.
