It became fully operational in May 1942 and functioned as a pure killing centre until a prisoner uprising on 14 October 1943, after which the Germans closed and razed the site to conceal it. Estimates of those murdered there — overwhelmingly Jews gassed on arrival — range from about 170,000 to 250,000, chiefly Polish Jews together with some 33,000 from the Netherlands and several thousand from Germany and other countries. In the 14 October 1943 revolt, prisoners killed several SS men and roughly 300 escaped through the minefield and wire; only around 50 survived the war. The site today holds the Sobibór Museum and memorial marking the mass graves. Sources: Wikipedia — [Sobibor extermination camp](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sobibor_extermination_camp); USHMM Holocaust Encyclopedia — [Sobibor](https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/sobibor); Britannica — [Sobibor](https://www.britannica.com/place/Sobibor). ## People with events here | Person | Event | | --- | --- | | [[Fajga Dyna Alszpektor (b.1868)]] | Died 1942 | | [[Abram Rotkier (b.1917)]] | Died 1942 | | [[Cwi Rotkier (b.1922)]] | Died 1942 | | [[Gdal Rotkier (b.1882)]] | Died ~1942 | | [[Chaja Spitz (b.1910)]] | Died 1942 | | [[Dwojra Laja Spitz (b.1911)]] | Died 1942 | | [[Hersz Shapiro (b.1921)]] | Died ~1942 | | [[Malka Spitz (b.1901)]] | Died 1942 | | [[Szmul Shapiro (d.1942)]] | Died 1942 | | [[Naomi (b.1898)]] | Died ~1942 | | [[Bajla Barbanel (b.1911)]] | Died ~1943 | | [[Rajzla Wajnberg (b.1881)]] | Died 1945 | | [[Jakow Fruchtman (b.1905)]] | Died | | [[Frimeta Lewenberg (b.1868)]] | Died | | [[Estera Spitz (b.1880)]] | Died |
