## Overview
Szczekociny (Yiddish Shtshekotshin) is a small town on the Pilica river in southern Poland. An organized Jewish community formed in the late 18th century, with a synagogue and cemetery; by the late 19th century well over 2,000 Jews lived there, roughly two-thirds of the population, and in 1937 the 3,018 Jews made up slightly more than half of all inhabitants. In 1942, under the German "Final Solution," about 1,500 of the town's Jews were deported to the Treblinka extermination camp; some 90% of the Jewish population perished and much of the town was destroyed. Today Szczekociny is a Polish town in the Silesian Voivodeship, its former Jewish community remembered through cemetery remnants and genealogical documentation.
