Established under Operation Reinhard, the killing camp Treblinka II operated from 23 July 1942 to 19 October 1943; a separate labour camp (Treblinka I) stood roughly 2 km away. Between about 800,000 and 900,000 Jews were murdered there in gas chambers — chiefly Polish Jews, together with Jews deported from Austria, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Yugoslavia, Germany and elsewhere, plus roughly 2,000 Roma — making it the deadliest Reinhard camp and second only to Auschwitz-Birkenau. A prisoner revolt on 2 August 1943 preceded the camp's dismantling; the Germans demolished it to erase evidence.
