Jewish settlement grew from the 17th–18th centuries, largely by migrants from neighboring Galicia, making Sighet the religious and cultural center of Maramureș Jewry and a major Hasidic hub (the Sighet dynasty); by WWII Jews were close to 40% of the ~40,000 inhabitants. After Hungary re-annexed the city in 1940, two ghettos (~13,000 Jews) were established in April 1944 and deported to Auschwitz between 16 and 22 May 1944, where most were murdered; survivors included
