Its port was a significant point of entry for immigrants, and Baltimore drew both an early German-Jewish community and, from the 1880s, a large influx of Eastern European Jews who settled in East Baltimore around Lombard Street ("Corned Beef Row") before moving northwest to Park Heights and later the suburbs.
