Its Jewish community, one of the largest in the United States, took shape with Central European (German) arrivals from the 1840s and expanded enormously with the wave of East European Jewish immigration from the 1880s onward, concentrated first on the Near West Side (the Maxwell Street district) and later in neighborhoods such as Lawndale, Albany Park, and Rogers Park.
