## Overview
Columbus is the capital and largest city of Ohio, seat of Franklin County. Its Jewish community dates to 1840 with the arrival of Bavarian Jewish families such as the Nusbaums and Gundersheimers, and grew through later Eastern European immigration into a well-established community with synagogues, schools, and communal institutions. It is the third-largest Jewish community in Ohio, after Cleveland and Cincinnati. (Note: distinct from Columbus, Georgia — this note covers the Ohio state capital.)
