Its Jewish community dates to 1840 with the arrival of Bavarian Jewish families such as the Nusbaums and Gundersheimers, and grew through later Eastern European immigration into a well-established community with synagogues, schools, and communal institutions. It is the third-largest Jewish community in Ohio, after Cleveland and Cincinnati.
