# Lakewood <table class="place-meta"> <tr><td>Local name(s)</td><td>Lakewood Township (English)</td></tr> <tr><td>Region (today)</td><td>Ocean County, New Jersey, United States</td></tr> <tr><td>Coordinates</td><td>40°06′N 74°13′W</td></tr> </table> ## Overview Lakewood is a township in Ocean County, New Jersey, and one of the fastest-growing Orthodox (Haredi) Jewish population centers in the United States. Its community grew up around **Beth Medrash Govoha**, founded by Rabbi Aharon Kotler in 1943 and now the largest yeshiva outside Israel (roughly 9,600 students). The Orthodox population makes up more than half the township's residents, and the town's population grew about 46% between 2010 and 2020 (to ~135,000). Note: there are other US places named Lakewood (notably in Ohio and Colorado); for these records the Orthodox New Jersey township is the intended locality — verify against each person's other data. <small>Sources: Wikipedia — Lakewood Township, New Jersey; Wikipedia — Beth Medrash Govoha; Jewish Insider — "Inside New Jersey's Orthodox boomtown."</small> ## People with events here | Person | Event | | --- | --- | | [[Sarah Grossman (b.1970)]] | Born 03/09/1970 | | [[Benjamin Morgan (b.1896)]] | Died 07/22/1976 | | [[Mordechai Zalman Bronspegel (b.1993)]] | Born 07/22/1993 | | [[Penina Fisher (b.1994)]] | Born 09/01/1994 | | [[Henya Rottenberg (b.1996)]] | Born 08/18/1996 | | [[Israel Glincman (b.1900)]] | Died 04/2001 | | [[Hadassah Frankel]] | Born |
