Its Jewish community—today among the largest in the world outside Israel—began with a handful of merchants in the 1850s and swelled through internal migration and immigration in the twentieth century, with major concentrations later developing in the Fairfax district, Boyle Heights (an early immigrant hub), and the San Fernando Valley.
