Its Lower East Side was the first home for the majority of Eastern European Jewish immigrants arriving between the 1880s and 1920s, becoming one of the most densely populated Jewish neighborhoods in the world, packed with tenements, synagogues, landsmanshaftn, and the Yiddish theater and press.
