From the 1880s through the 1920s it was the main gateway for Eastern European Jewish immigrants, most of whom entered through Castle Garden and later Ellis Island. By the early 20th century the city — especially Manhattan's Lower East Side and the outer boroughs of Brooklyn and the Bronx — held the largest Jewish population of any city in the world, and it remains a central hub of American Jewish life.
