As a privileged free-trade city in the Habsburg era, Brody was a major commercial entrepot and a leading center of the Galician Haskalah, while also home to distinguished rabbinic figures; the town gave its name to the itinerant 'Brody Singers,' pioneers of Yiddish theater. At its peak in the 1880 Austrian census the town counted about 15,300 Jews, roughly three-quarters of the population.
